Findwood

EnglishSvenska

Salvage driftwood on a quiet Swedish lake, and bring an old wood quay back to life.

A slow lake and a loaded boat

You steer with one finger. Drive up to a floating log, throw the line, and tow the load back to the quay. Every log has a species, a volume, a quality and a water content, and together they decide what the boat can carry and what the load is worth. Tow too much in a hard wind and the line snaps.

The weather turns from calm to breeze, rain, fog and strong wind, the day runs from morning to evening, and the fuel in the tank decides how far out you dare to go.

The goal: light the lighthouse again

Harbourmaster Signe has kept Vedkajen open on her own since the saw fell silent, and the lighthouse out on the point has been dark for twenty years. Every load pays for the next step: a wood shed, a drying house, a quay saw — and finally the lantern itself.

Nothing ends when it is lit. The lake is as full of timber as ever, and the quay stays open for as long as you want to keep working it.

Below the surface, and ashore

Along the old floating route, timber still lies on the bottom. With an echo sounder you can find it, drop the grapple and raise it by hand: hold the winch with one thumb and steer the boat with the other, so the log swings past rocks, old nets and pike on the way up. Sunken timber is dense and dark, pays far better than driftwood, and gives the best building material the quay can get.

You can also go ashore on the islands, fell trees with a forest axe and pick mushrooms — chanterelles, porcini and hedgehog mushrooms, in baskets that vary from empty to unusually full.
